Alberta, Canada

In 1994, the Government of Alberta, Canada initiated a program called "Measuring Up" to monitor progress toward sustainability goals and to create a framework for government accountability. The program established 23 "core measurements," or indicators for goals in three broad categories:

  • Providing excellent schools, colleges, universities, and technical institutes
  • Building a healthy society with accessible health care
  • Providing basic support and protection for those in need
  • Working with others to support families
PROSPERITY
  • Creating a dynamic environment for growth in business, industry and jobs
  • Ensuring that Alberta has a highly skilled and productive workforce
  • Providing effective government that lives within its means
  • Building an efficient system of roads, highways, utilities, and public spaces
  • Promoting new ideas, innovation and research
PRESERVATION
  • Fostering strong communities
  • Ensuring a safe society where justice prevails
  • Maintaining a clean environment
  • Promoting pride in Alberta and strength within Canada
  • Protecting values and culture
The Government of Alberta publishes annual "Measuring Up" reports detailing information gathered on the 23 indicators.

Fraser Basin, British Columbia, Canada

The Fraser Basin, or area drained by the Fraser River and its tributaries, covers more than 25 percent of British Columbia’s land area and contains more than 2/3 of its population. The Fraser Basin Council is a not-for-profit, charitable organization established in 1997 to ensure the sustainability of the Fraser Basin. The group established a set of sustainability indicators, and in 2003 released A Snapshot on Sustainability: State of the Fraser Basin Report
