Water Efficiency Success Stories

The Water Efficiency Program in Santa Barbara County, California offers information on home and landscape water conservation, as well as educational materials on water conservation.

Businesses for an Environmentally Sustainable Tomorrow is a program in Portland, Oregon that aims to provide "one-stop-shopping" for area businesses to help them make their properties more energy-efficient and water-efficient and generate less waste. 

A Groundwater Education Program was started by the League of Women Voters in the town of Rockford, Illinois. 

N.C. Project Green, a state sustainability initiative in North Carolina, has a state agency water conservation initiative that developed Long-term Water Efficiency Plan Guidance for state agencies and institutions.

Project Harambee is a grassroots effort in Atlanta, Georgia in which free ultra-low-flush toilets, low-flow shower heads and energy conservation information were distributed to low-income households in an effort to reduce water and energy consumption. 

Southwest Florida Water Management District has a Water Conservation website describing a variety of programs and resources for agricultural, commercial and landscaping water conservation.

The Toilet Replacement Program is based out of Los Angeles and employs community-based organizations in the distribution of 100,000 free ultra-low-flush toilets annually to households in southern California. 

The Ultra-Low-Flush Toilet Program employs local students to identify eligible households in low-income, Los Angeles neighborhoods and then helps install free ultra-low-flush toilets to these homes in an effort to conserve water. 

Water Conservation and Pollution Prevention Demonstration Site is a Jefferson, Maryland project that features a waterless, composting toilet and a greywater filtration system that together serve as a complete, low-cost, and non-polluting alternative to septic systems or sewers. 

Yelm, Washington, has been recognized as the first city in the state to reuse 100% of its treated wastewater. Instead of dumping reclaimed wastewater on land or into rivers, Yelm uses its water for landscape irrigation of parks, churches and public buildings, in fire hydrants, and in an aquifer recharge wetland.

Water Conservation Case Studies, from Hospitals for a Healthy Environment, describes how hospitals across the country are implementing water conservation projects to save water and money.

Water Conservation Case Studies presented by the Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance provide comprehensive information on specific industrial water management practices that have successfully reduced consumption and/or prevented pollution of water resources at Massachusetts facilities.
