Air Quality Strategies:
Industrial Emissions Reduction

The quantity and toxicity of pollutants issuing from U.S. industrial air pollution sources has decreased significantly over the last three decades, largely as a result of the federal Clean Air Act. Pollution prevention and emissions trading programs offer industry incentives to reduce air pollution to a level that is less than that required by federal and state statutes.

The Toxics Release Inventory is a publicly available EPA database containing information about toxic emissions and off-site transfers of more than 600 toxic chemicals used at certain manufacturing facilities.

Climate Leaders, a voluntary program administered by EPA, is an industry-government partnership that encourages companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies and set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals.

GNET, the Global Network of Environment and Technology, is a project of the DOE Office of Science and Technology. One feature of the site is the National Environmental Technology database of innovative remediation and environmentally sustainable technologies. The site also features daily news updates on new technologies.

EPA's Technology Transfer Network offers information on air pollution science, assists companies in estimating emissions, allows users to download business assistance materials, and describes voluntary emissions reductions programs. The Clearinghouse for Inventories and Emission Factors (CHIEF) serves as EPA's central clearinghouse for the latest information on air emission inventories.

U.S. EPA’s Waste Reduction Resource Center and the North Carolina Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance have compiled a list of Pollution Prevention Core References by Industry Sector. These references include articles and reports, fact sheets and case studies specific to industries.

CleanerProduction.com offers a variety of resources for business managers, on a range of topics related to sustainable industry. An extensive collection of links includes case studies, information on specific business functions, and resources applicable to specific industry sectors.

UNEP's Industry and Environment OzonAction Programme site contains a large online library of technical and policy information, an online newsletter, media, and links to other sites, as well as industrial-sector-specific information on halons and methyl bromide.
