Education Resources for Sustainable Development

 

Education is a key component in achieving successful sustainable community development. A number of colleges and universities offer degree programs or curricula in sustainable development and urban and rural planning to train students for careers in this field. Additionally, many resources offer education materials on sustainable development for K-12 students and teachers. We’ve identified some of those resources here. Cornell offers a Master of Professional Studies, Environmental Management Concentration. Students are trained to resolve complex environmental problems through technical solutions and technical expertise, as well as broad-based administrative, analytical, and managerial skills. Offers a degree/diploma program in Urban Sustainability jointly with the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University. George Washington University offers several courses, both graduate and undergraduate, that focus on the environment and sustainability. Examples include "Sustainability/Green University Practicum," which explores sustainability from different perspectives, including natural science, social science, and health science. A non-profit organization that offers a Master's Degree in Applied Community Change and Conservation, as well as customized training programs. The Master's Degree program trains leaders of community-based change while allowing them to continue and enhance their existing work. Approximately two months of each year are spent at field instruction sites in India, the U.S., Peru, and Tibet, with the remainder of the year spent on the job in home communities.

Sustainable Careers Institute (SCI)
A New York-based nonprofit organization that supports an approach to career services in higher education that is based upon a philosophy of sustainability. The Institute operates in partnership with career centers in colleges and universities, and with professional societies and nonprofits
working in related areas. SCI helps career counseling centers to promote work options that reflect students' inner values and practical needs, as well as options that help create a society that is more democratic, just, humane and ecologically sustainable. Of particular interest on this website is "Good Works Central," which is an extensive, web-based resource for work opportunities and workplace issues.

Albuquerque's Environmental Story: Educating For a Sustainable Community
Jointly developed by the City of Albuquerque (New Mexico), the Albuquerque Public Schools, and the Albuquerque Conservation Association, this on-line, 464-page book is aimed at students in fourth and higher grades. It includes activities and worksheets to help foster a "sustainable mindset" in students. Topics include air, water quality, solid and hazardous waste, energy, historic preservation, the built environment, transportation, neighborhoods, and downtown redevelopment.

Energy for Keeps: A Electricity from Renewable Energy is a educational resource from Educators for the Environment focusing on renewable energy. It can be downloaded free.

New Crusaders Renewable Energy Elementary Education Program Provides a fun, visually stimulating resource for teaching renewable energy concepts to children in grades 4-5. Fully aligned with the U.S. National Science Standards, this program consists of a workbook and video that provide a set of experiences for your children to learn about solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower and other alternative energy concepts. It also
provides a limited number of exercises to make the connections between traditional fossil fuels and those renewable resources.

Under contract to the Florida Energy Office, the Alliance has developed a comprehensive energy education program for Florida teachers and students. Through the program, a variety of curricula has been developed, including printed materials, CD-ROMs, and videodiscs. Several sets of instruction materials have sustainability components, as does a new interactive CD-ROM, which will be available in approximately November 1996. Energy Efficiency Campaign
DOE launched a national public service advertising campaign in March 2004 designed to make children and their parents aware of energy efficient behavior. The campaign features a reprehensible new villain—the energy-wasting Energy Hog—and includes public service announcements on television, radio, and the Internet. The centerpiece of the campaign is the new Energy Hog website, which is aimed at children, but also includes resources for parents and teachers, as well as Internet versions of the Energy Hog ads. The Web site's main attractions are the Energy Hog Training Camp and its five training games, where children can train to become Energy Hog Busters and learn fun and simple ways to use energy more efficiently.

The Izaak Walton League of America has developed a number of educational materials focusing on community sustainability. Among its publications is Community Sustainability: A Mini-Curriculum for Grades 9-12, which "is designed to help teachers provide students with information about sustainability. Exercises explore how citizens, businesses and governments are working to achieve sustainability at the community level. The guide also focuses on the environmental action skills students need to participate in the emerging community sustainability movement."

The website's "Resource Center" is a collection of free databases that can help college and university faculty, administrators, and staff incorporate sustainability information into their classrooms and activities. TCSF formed a collaborative partnership with several other agencies to enhance environmental education curricula to include sustainable development. The Sustainability Curriculum Program involves teacher leaders and community participants from the Tahoe-Truckee region and from surrounding communities. Through the program, students will work on sustainable development-related projects and teachers will be provided with education and classroom support.

This online database serves as a clearinghouse of information on transportation- and air-quality-related public education and information campaigns and programs around the U.S. Many of the programs identified in the database have developed curriculum materials.

Planet Neighborhood is a project produced by WETA-TV as part of the Public Television Outreach Alliance's Earth & Us Campaign. The project's three one-hour educational programs focus on green on environmentally sustainable technologies. In addition, WETA developed a 24-page teachers guide for middle school students that provides hands-on activities in sustainabile technologies. The above website has additional information to help teachers plan curriculums.
