Resources for Sustainable Development
Education is a key component in achieving successful sustainable community
development. A number of colleges and universities offer degree programs or curricula
in sustainable development and urban and rural planning to train students for
careers in this field. Additionally, many resources offer education materials
on sustainable development for K-12 students and teachers. We’ve identified some
of those resources here. We welcome your suggestions

A non-profit organization that offers a Master's Degree in Applied Community
Change and Conservation, as well as customized training programs. The Master's
Degree program trains leaders of community-based change while allowing them
to continue and enhance their existing work. Approximately two months of each
year are spent at field instruction sites in India, the U.S., Peru, and Tibet,
with the remainder of the year spent on the job in home communities.

Careers Institute (SCI)
A New York-based nonprofit organization that supports an approach to
career services in higher education that is based upon a philosophy of sustainability.
The Institute operates in partnership with career centers in colleges and universities,
and with professional societies and nonprofits working in related areas. SCI
helps career counseling centers to promote work options that reflect students'
inner values and practical needs, as well as options that help create a society
that is more democratic, just, humane and ecologically sustainable. Of particular
interest on this website is "Good Works Central," which is an extensive,
web-based resource for work opportunities and workplace issues.

on Sustainable Development for Grades K-12Albuquerque's
Environmental Story: Educating For a Sustainable Community Jointly
developed by the City of Albuquerque (New Mexico), the Albuquerque Public Schools,
and the Albuquerque Conservation Association, this on-line, 464-page book is aimed
at students in fourth and higher grades. It includes activities and worksheets
to help foster a "sustainable mindset" in students. Topics include air,
water quality, solid and hazardous waste, energy, historic preservation, the built

of a workbook and video that provide a set of experiences for your children to
learn about solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower and other alternative energy concepts.

Under contract to the Florida Energy Office, the Alliance has developed a comprehensive
energy education program for Florida teachers and students. Through the program,
a variety of curricula has been developed, including printed materials, CD-ROMs,
and videodiscs. Several sets of instruction materials have sustainability components,
as does a new interactive CD-ROM, which will be available in approximately November

Efficiency Campaign DOE launched a national public service advertising
campaign in March 2004 designed to make children and their parents aware of energy
efficient behavior. The campaign features a reprehensible new villainthe
energy-wasting Energy Hogand includes public service announcements on television,
radio, and the Internet. The centerpiece of the campaign is the new Energy
Hog website, which is aimed at children, but also includes resources for parents
and teachers, as well as Internet versions of the Energy Hog ads. The Web site's

The Izaak Walton League of America has developed a number of educational materials
focusing on community sustainability. Among its publications is Community Sustainability:
A Mini-Curriculum for Grades 9-12, which "is designed to help teachers
provide students with information about sustainability. Exercises explore how
citizens, businesses and governments are working to achieve sustainability at
the community level. The guide also focuses on the environmental action skills

TCSF formed a collaborative partnership with several other agencies
to enhance environmental education curricula to include sustainable development.
The Sustainability Curriculum Program involves teacher leaders and community participants
from the Tahoe-Truckee region and from surrounding communities. Through the program,

Neighborhood is a project produced by WETA-TV as part of the Public Television
Outreach Alliance's Earth & Us Campaign. The project's three one-hour educational
programs focus on green on environmentally sustainable technologies. In addition,
WETA developed a 24-page teachers guide for middle school students that provides
