Sustainable Business Educational Programs

Academic Institutions

Yale University's Industrial Environmental Management Program aims to equip students with an integrated set of skills with which to tackle some of the complex, multifaceted environmental problems facing industrial managers. Additionally, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies offers an annual Corporate Environmental Leadership Seminar, an intensive short course for senior managers on environmental conditions and issues.

University of Michigan's Corporate Environmental Management Program (CEMP) equips leaders, executives, and managers--whether they work in the private sector or for an environmental non-profit organization--with the skills and knowledge necessary to create environmentally and economically sustainable organizations.

Haas School of Business, Socially Responsible Business Initiative is an interdisciplinary program that integrates and coordinates interests in Business Ethics, Global Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Enterprise, Environmental Management, and Non-Profit and Public Management. The aim of the program is to prepare and inspire graduates to lead in a new era of competitive, sustainable and enlightened global business and to apply practical skills in ways that enhance the common good.

The Center for Environmental Management at the Kentucky Institute for the Environment and Sustainable Development provides research and professional education services to provide the insight necessary for creating economically and socially responsible actions by managers and public sector officials.

Bainbridge Island Graduate Institute offers an MBA in Sustainable Business that fully integrates environmental and social responsibility into all of its courses. The program combines distance learning with face-to-face sessions six times per year.

Sustainable Enterprise Academy of the Haub Program in Business and Sustainability at the Schulich School of Business, York University, provides Senior Executive Seminars on Corporate Sustainable Development, to help provide the vision, education and tools needed for executives to champion sustainable development in their companies and agencies.

The Green Design Institute at Carnegie Mellon University is a major interdisciplinary research effort that nvolves the formation of partnerships with companies, government agencies, and foundations to develop pioneering design, management and manufacturing processes that can improve environmental quality and product quality while enhancing sustainable economic development.

The Lowell Center for Sustainable Production at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell provides programs to bring together university faculty, professional staff, and students to work with business, labor, community groups, and public and private sector professionals to facilitate the transition to sustainable systems of production and work.

The Vanderbilt Center for Environmental Management Studies at Vanderbilt University provides education programs to explore the environmental responsibilities among among industry, government, and academia.

Non-Profit Organizations and Government Agencies

Second Nature is dedicated to assisting colleges and universities in their quest to integrate sustainability as a core component of all education and practice, and to help expand their efforts to make human activity sustainable.

University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (ULSF) supports colleges and universities in making sustainability an integral part of curriculum, research, operations, outreach, faculty and staff development, student life and institutional mission.

Beyond Grey Pinstripes is a joint project of World Resources Institute and the Aspen Institute. "Beyond Grey Pinstripes: Preparing MBA's for Social and Environmental Stewardship" tracks the greening of business education and reports on pioneering U.S. business schools dedicated to training managers to handle social issues and environmental stewardship.

National Pollution Prevention Center for Higher Education aims to educate students, faculty, and professionals about pollution prevention to promote sustainable development. Emphasis is placed on evaluating the full range of environmental effects associated with products and services, from raw materials acquisition and manufacturing to use and disposal.

National Wildlife Foundation's Campus Ecology program helps transform the nation's college campuses into living models of an ecologically sustainable society, and train a new generation of environmental leaders.

The North American Alliance for Green Education is comprised of educational institutions and organizations with a commitment to environmental studies programs, located in diverse bioregions.

Publications

Teaching Business Sustainability, from Greenleaf Publishing, seeks to serve as a inspiration and guidance on how to teach business sustainability, as well as for organizations looking to reinvigorate internal management education programs to factor in corporate responsibility and sustainability issues.
